Gravy boats are relatively new to the tabletop as they made their first appearance during the first few decades of the eighteenth century. The oldest known examples date back to 1717. They are oval with slightly undulating rims, a scrolled handle on either side and a lip at each end. In around 1720, however, gravy boats with a handle at one end and a lip at the other became more common.
